We get asked all the time: what are the most popular songs for weddings that you play in Dallas/Ft worth?

Our answer always seems to surprise most people: usually, we get requested the same 20 songs. Over and over again.

Sure, there are some couples that want to focus on one genre over another. But we’ve done this long enough to notice that even in those receptions there are a few ol faithfuls that have to be played at some point. If you are planning a wedding reception that guarantees to move your guest out of their seat and moving their feet, make sure your DJ has these on the must-play list.

#20 All The Small Things - Blink 182

If we had a dollar for every song a band needed to make for radio so their label would shut up, we probably still would not have as much money as this song has made Blink 182. Released in September 1999, the song was originally named “Buttercakes-Buttermuffin” by the bands lead vocalist Tom Delonge. Luckily, Tom changed it to All The Small Things as an ode to his then girlfriend turned wife Jennifer Jenkins. In fact, the lyrics “She left me roses by the stairs / Surprises let me know she cares” was based off when Jenkins would do just that when Delonge came home from the studio one night. Little did she know this would be a lyric sung from any millennial who had enough liquid courage to do some karaoke ever since. Just watch your wedding reception chant each melody from the verse to hook that whole way through when it drops. Guess it really is the small things that matter.

#19: Friends In Low Places - Garth Brooks

Earl Bud Lee was just having lunch with some buddies when the Friends In Low Places title came to him. The check had come, and it was then Lee remembered that he forgot his money. He told his friend, “Don’t worry. I have friends in low places. I know the cook.” The same was in this case for the lyrics. They were written on napkins before they were given to Brookes to record a demo. Brooks, working as a shoe salesman at the time, was a struggling demo musician in Nashville. But this would be the last demo he made as just a singer. The drinking anthem would catapult Brooks into stardom and take the number 1 spot for CMT’s 40 Greatest Drinking Songs: Morning After. Legend has it you can even hear the sound of a beer being cracked by a musician at the session. We’ll cheers to that.

#18 This Is How We Do it - Montell Jordan

It’s only fitting that the 1st R&B single from the most legendary hip hop label of all time sampled one of its most important Hip Hop hits of all time. Keeping the same thrilling story-telling method of Sick Rick, Montell Jordan would flip the classic Children’s Story into a tale of a west coast turn up on a Friday night. When we see heads from all ages, races, and occupations at weddings move and bob their heads in agreement to lyrics, “The summertime skirts and the guys in Kani. All the gang bangers forgot about the drive-by,” we almost forgot it came out almost 30 years ago.

#17 We Are Family - Sister Sledge

There might be another anthem of unity more significant that Sister Sledge’s “We Are Family”. but we guarantee none of them groove as much as this one. Written by Chic’s Bernard Edwards and legend Nile Rodgers, the lyrics are an example of art imitating life since the song was literally acknowledging the members of Sister Sledge connection of being siblings. A simple but honest concept that allowed then-19 year old Kathy Sledge to sing the lead vocals in just one take. This one take has prompted countless organizations, teams, and groups to adopt the song as their own tune to gather and celebrate. Even the Library of Congress selected it for preservation in the national recording registry. But how it brings 2 families together by merging them all on a wedding reception dance floor is still its most endearing accomplishment.

#16 Baby Got Back - Sir Mixalot

In every generation of music, there comes a song that breaks all rules that come before it. And then there’s Baby Got Back by Sir Mix-A-Lot. To say that this is only the king of all rumpshakers would still not give it enough justice. It is hip hop cultural commentary at its finest. Even it being originally banned by MTV in 1992 could not stop it being championed by voluptuous women across the world and the men who loved them. While many media outlets wrote off the raunchy lyrics as being the premier objectification of women in rap, its fanfare grew like wildfire and won Sir Mix-A-Lot the 1993 Grammy for Best Rap Performance. Well deserved, since lyrics like "I ain't talkin' 'bout Playboy Cause silicone parts are made for toys” or “So Cosmo says you're fat. Well I ain't down with that” became a battlecry for all genders tired of the impossible beauty standards of the day. Even when we play it from the “O MY GOD BECKY” skit, you’ll hear women reenact it word for word. No matter how fancy a wedding reception is, leave it to this cult classic to loosen up those lips and hips.

#15 Play That Funky Music

When the gigs are slow and the audiences are thinning out, there's always one last play a band can do before they hang it up: making a song about selling out. The Ohio band Wild Cherry frontman Rob Parissi did just that. His band mates had their backs against the wall finding it hard to find gigs doing rock covers in 1970’s Philly. Then one night after a heckler shouted, “Are you white boys going to play some funky music?” Rob then thought he might give the funk fever audiences what they wanted and the rock drenched “Play That Funky Music” was born. Whether it was the gravel in Rob's voice or the chuck berry like guitar solo, the song took the band from number 1 on the billboard charts to your favorite uncle's hearts. Just watch how his eyes light up once that bass line starts up at your reception.
