#10 No Hands - Waka Flocka Flame Feat Wale and Roscoe Dash
After spending hours in make-up, rehearsals, I do’s, and photo-shoots a bridal party needs a signal. A signal of completion. A signal that they have won the game. And nothing quite sets off that triumph like those triumphant horns on Waka Flocka Flame’s No Hands. Roscoe Dash makes very clear instructions here, “GIRRRLLL DROP IT TO THE FLOOOO LET ME SEE THAT BOOTY GOOOO”, The ladies all seem to follow suit at the drop of the beat but there is more special than even twerkin that occurs. Between the thunderous 808 and the trademark trap syths of the 2010s, there’s an endless amount of one-liners from Waka and Wale that poke out just slow enough for guests to recite. And then you get to Roscoe’s 3rd verse where the pace builds up to a climactic “RAIN RAIN GO AWAY, THAT’S WHAT ALL MY HATER SAY”. It’s like an adult nursery rhyme that an entire reception has no choice but to sing together. Like the song's producer Drumma Boy tag says in its intro: LISTEN TO THIS TRACK. Again and again.
#9 Brooks and Dunn - Neon Moon
If someone asked you to name a song that is sad as it is romantic. It would be hard to name one as good as Neon Moon by Brooks and Dunn. The soft drums and the soothing guitars are almost too hypnotizing for Ronnie Dunn’s vocals about stewing over a break up: “There’s a rundown bar across the railroad tracks, got a table for 2 way in the back, where I sit alone and think of losing you.” Not exactly what you would imagine hearing while dancing and holding your sweetheart. This classic is proof that songs are more than lyrics, it’s the feeling of the overall sound. It’s rare for songs that make couples twist and turn in a whole choreographed dance to just holding each other while staring in each other's eyes. Maybe it’s Dunn’s secret ingredient in the song that just draws couples to each other and to the dance floor when a DJ its: “I was taught, when I got into the co-writing thing in Nashville, to always leave just a ray of hope,” Dunn told CMT. “It’s got it. He’s OK as long as he’s sitting under that neon light.”
#8 Yeah - Usher Feat Lil John and Ludacriss
DUN NUH DUN NUH, OK! There might not be more synths in the history of music more recognizable than Usher’s Yeah!. When it dropped at the top of the 2004, it was inescapable. The radio, the T.V., the club, the school dance; everywhere you turned or turned on you heard those synths. They are like triumph trumpets that rally the troops to the wedding reception dance floor in the name of CRUNK. Yeah! was the only club banger on Usher’s blockbuster album Confessions but it was THE club banger of the early 2000’s. Few things can set off a perfect marriage than it’s perfect marriage of elements in this song. Usher's smooth croons are sensual and sexy but not explicit. Ludacris’ raps are rambunctious but not raunchy. And Lil Jon’s callbacks and ablibs keep the song anchored with energy the entire time. Yeah, commemorates the Crunk era of the 2000’s by making its strongest strengths accessible to every age group and walk of life without watering it down. BRING THE BEAT BACK and check out this YEAH mashup by DJ SIR Real.
#7 Mr Brightside - The Killers
Songs have intros but Mr Brightside by The Killers builds up to one climax after the next. Just playing the first 5 seconds of the song’s guitar rift, will send a wedding reception into a trance before they start singing Brandon Flowers reminiscent lyrics of a cheating girlfriend. “I knew something was wrong," Flowers says in a 2009 interview with Q Magazine. "I have these instincts. I went to the Crown and Anchor and my girlfriend was there with another guy." Even though Flowers admits the details of the affair is “all in his head”, the pain and anguish of this scene over raging drums and post-punk rhythms puts a reception into a dancing rage. Look no further if you’re looking for a song that brings out the safe punk rock jumpin energy without it turning into a dangerous moshpit. While the song only has one verse that repeats, the chant “It was only a kiss” seems to take on a different meaning each time. Whether it is a dismissive excuse Flowers’ girlfriend told him or it’s just what he tells himself for comfort, it’s now a dance floor battle cry. One many reasons why it sits at number 48 on Rolling Stone’s best songs of the 21st Century. Now that’s looking on the brightside.
#6 Fergalicious
Fergalicious DEF. Fergalicious DEF. Fergie’s Fergalicious definitely is the song that guests would never think of but always want played. It’s buzzing strings over ferocious electro drums, give a crowd a sense of urgency that something is coming: THE TURN UP. With chants, beat drops, and sounds that seem like they came from your favorite Saturday cartoon, this banger is a DJ’s dream to rock a crowd. It’s lyrics are flirtatious yet classy, riddled with female self-love and sensual boundaries. Fergie once told MTV the song reminds her of when “I went to the Knots Berry Farm in California, and I did what I thought was a dance battle.” Makes sense because you’ll even see men breaking out in dance battles against each other if they aren’t hypnotized by their women reciting this song to them bar for bar.
